# Share of voice

> How brand names fill the share-of-voice chart on Competitors.

Share of voice is each brand's part of all the brand names in answers to your prompts. It appears in one chart on [Competitors](/concepts/competitors). The leaderboard ranks by [Heralded Score](/methodology/heralded-score).

## How it is counted

Every distinct brand an answer names takes one slot in that answer. A brand's share of voice is the number of answers that name it, divided by all the slots across all answers.

Say three answers come back. The first names you and one competitor, the second names you and two competitors, and the third names two competitors and not you. That is 2 + 3 + 2 = 7 slots, and you fill 2 of them, so your share of voice is 29%.

* A brand named twice in one answer still fills one slot.
* Brands you don't track also take slots.
* Social and content platforms, such as YouTube, LinkedIn, Reddit, Quora and Medium, take slots and are never ranked. A marketplace or a review site counts as an ordinary brand.
* Answers that name no brand hold no slots.
* A competitor you started tracking after the period's answers were read, and that none of them names, has no share yet. The chart leaves it out, and the API returns `null` for it rather than 0.

## The chart

The stacked bar adds up to 100%. It shows your brand, the five tracked competitors with the largest shares, the remaining competitors you track grouped together, and **Everyone else** for brands you don't track. The legend prints each share. **Everyone else** has a hatched fill.

The chart uses the selected period and filters. Its info button says when it counts weekly answers only. Each answer has the same weight, so an engine that names many brands adds more slots.

Share of voice includes prompts that name a brand. A prompt that names you can lift your share, and one that names a competitor can lift theirs. It does not change the leaderboard's score order.

When no share can be measured, the box says **Not measured yet.**
